AHMEDABAD

The tour starts with an early morning arrival in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.  Your morning is free and in the afternoon, you begin the tour with a visit to the old city that includes a trip to see Sarkhej Roza.  This is complex located just outside Ahmedabad and comprises a mosque, tomb and gardens.  The site is famous for its mosque and the tomb is dedicated to Sufi saints.

Continue your tour with a visit to the 12th century Jama Masjid, with its multiple columns and large courtyard.  You can also see the tomb of Ahmed Shah Baadshah, Gujarat’s ruler in the 15th century.

Overnight in hotel.

AHMEDABAD – PATAN – MODERA – DASADA

After breakfast, start your tour at Sabarmati Ashram.  This was home to Mohandas Gandhi for just over a decade and it also served as a centre for India’s struggle for independence.  Gandhi and his followers began their campaign of non-violent, civil disobedience by undertaking their “salt march” from here to the coastal village of Dandi, over 200 miles away.

Continue your tour by visiting Adalaj Vava, a beautifully preserved step well built in 1499 and considered one of Gujarat’s main attractions.  Step wells are structures that are unique to India.  They are an elaborate and usually ornate architectural marvel with steps built along the sides in a geometrical pattern to reach the water.  Gujarat has several of these elaborate structures and they are worth visiting.

In the afternoon, leave for Dasada, stopping en route to see the step well in Patan.  Continue your drive to Modhera where there is a beautifully carved temple from the 11th century dedicated the Hindu Sun God Surya.  The temple was built to allow the rays of sunlight to go through the delicate carvings and surround the whole structure.

After your visit to Modhera, continue to Dasada. Check-in and overnight at hotel.

DASADA – BHUJ

After breakfast, start your tour in a jeep to see the salt marshes and part of the largest salt deserts in the world.  There is an opportunity to see local wildlife such as wild asses and exotic birds.

In the afternoon, leave for Bhuj. Arrival and check-in.

Overnight at hotel.

BHUJ

After breakfast, visit one of the tribal villages of the desert where you can see their traditional lifestyles and techniques that they still use to carve metals, decorate textiles and do woodwork.

Return to your hotel in Bhuj and overnight in hotel.

BHUJ – GONDAL

After breakfast, leave for Gondal, stopping en route to visit a typical craft centre with traditional textiles and spinning wheels. Continue on to Gondal and check-in at hotel.

In the afternoon, visit the Naulaka Palace, a structure dating from the 18th century with beautiful stone carvings that overlooks the river in Gondal.  After the Palace, visit the Swaminarayan Temple. This temple has some intricate carvings, reminiscent of the inlay work on the Taj Mahal, and is a spiritual site for Hindus.

Overnight in hotel.

GONDAL – JUNAGADH – SASANGIR

After breakfast, depart for Sasangir, stopping en route at the fort in Junagadh.  Its name means “Old Fort”. Don’t miss the unusual landmark of Mahabat Maqbara, a mausoleum complex nearby.  This was built around the mid-19th century and is an eclectic mix of architectural styles.  Take time to visit the Buddhist caves nearby that date back to the 3rd and 4th centuries; it is thought that some of the caves have been carved from monolithic rocks.

Continue your drive towards Sasangir; check-in and overnight in hotel.

SASANGIR

Begin your day with an early morning safari in the Gir National Park, famous for its landscapes and protected species.  The wildlife sanctuary has several species of flora and fauna and was established in the 1960s to try and protect Asiatic lions, which now roam freely in the park.

Return to the hotel for breakfast and enjoy free time for the rest of the day.  For those who missed the opportunity of the early morning safari, there is a chance to participate in the afternoon visit.

After breakfast, visit the island that used to be a Portuguese colony and an important port on the Arabian Sea. Stop at the fish market of Vanakbara; visit the massive fort built in the typical Portuguese style, from where you can enjoy great vistas of the sea. Visit the churches of St. Paul and St. Thomas, which have an interesting collection of European statues.

BHAVNAGAR-PALITANA-BHAVNAGAR

An early morning start to visit Palitana, the city of temples.  It has one of the biggest complexes of temples in the state and is one of the holiest places in Jainism.  There are almost 900 marble temples of differing sizes – possibly built over a period of nearly one thousand years – and they are located on Shatrunjaya Hill.

Please ensure you have comfortable footwear on as the temples can only be reached by walking up a staircase that is about two kilometres long.  We also recommend that you begin your tour early in the day so as to avoid the heat.  Porters are available but there is a fee. Return to your hotel for a late breakfast and enjoy some free time in the afternoon.
